For the last two weeks, our lectures focused on the Psychology and Cognition in Online Social Network, which makes me know more about the concept of three levels of cognition.
Level 1:Cognition
It is the first step we come across new things. We read the blogs on the website,we watch a video from Youtube, even just a glance of the white wall and blue sky.No more considering.Everyone can reach this level of cognition.

Level 2:Metacognition
It is defined as "cognition about cognition",or "knowing about knowing".Specifically,it is the knowledge and control of the thinking and learning activities.Like "Learn how to learn",which belongs to this level.

Level 3:Epistemic Cognition
It is the highest level of building knowledge.People can share ideas with each other, they can express their agreement and disagreement. There are 5 key components of epistemic cognition:
1.Epistemic aims.
2.Structure of knowledge.
3.Certainty,sources,and justification od knowledge.
4.Epistemic virtue and responsibility.
5.Reliably and processes.

5.Reliably and processes.
Let alone the highest level of cognition, the first two levels do have great differences as I know.
Firstly, they have different targets.
Cognition aims at the external and specific object while metacognition aims at the internal and abstract object.
Cognition aims at the external and specific object while metacognition aims at the internal and abstract object.
Secondly,they have different content.
Cognitive activities is some sort of intelligent operations. For example, when you read an article, through understanding the sentence and paragraph, you will finally reach an overall grasp of this article. Metacognition activities is the regulation and monitor of the cognition activities. For example, also when reading an article, metacognition means that you have a clear purpose, you will focus on the main content of the material, continuously regulate and self-questioning to check the readability and take corrective strategies at any time.

Last but not the least, they have different speed of development.
Infant was born with certain ability of cognition while only child gradually get to have the ability of metacognition. Besides, everyone has different level of metacognition at the beginning, and so their metacognition ability development varies a lot in adult age.Through learning and cultivating, people can get rapid development in metacognition ability.

As to the epistemic cognition,it is much more abstract. The key characteristics are that epistemological belief include justify knowledge rather than accept it and one will not simply believe in the source and authority of knowledge.
One typical example is the recent country education movement in Hong Kong.Different group, different social class and people in different age will have different thoughts. No matter how the government try to keep peace, the general public will have their own belief and take actions to show their thoughts.
The people who took part in this movement have their own thoughts and they didn't just accept the government's thoughts or the text book about country education.
I am not going to judge which thought is right, what I want to say is that epistemic cognition is just like this.
There were many mass anti-Japan protest marches in recent days. Some people hate Japan so much and destroyed everything made by Japan in a crazy behavior while others were in rational thoughts. They criticized and pointed out that Chinese can't be so cruel especially when this behaviour can totally solve no problem.
The three levels of cognition exist great knowledge which worth us to study deeply.

Get your point. Different target, content, and velocity of mastering such abilities. Really a good approach to tell the three levels of cognition apart.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your agreement with my analysis about the three levels of cognition. In fact, even if you don't know these concepts before, you actually are experiencing them on your own in the daily life.
DeleteI am a little confused about the three kinds of cognition. This article really gives me some help to understand them. Your point that metacognition is developing with someone's growing and has a different speed. Actually, when we learn something new, we have to go through the two periods. However, epistemic cognition is so abstract that I still can not understand well. Can you give me an easy explanation covering its five key components?
ReplyDeleteDear Lei, thank you for your comment and question. I think the concept of epistemic cognition is really too abstract to understand. As I understood, epistemic cognition is just an individual epistemology. It is a bridge linking the first two levels. Epistemic cognition can be summarized in three grade levels which are pre-reflective thinking , quasi-reflective thinking and reflective thinking. As to the five components that epistemic cognition should have,I can give you more details about them. For epistemic aims,it's concerned about what true beliefs, knowledge, understanding, and explanations that fit the data users adopt in conceiving new information. For epistemic cognition, it is highly multidimensional, whether ti is probabilistic or deterministic, personal or social, simple or complex, like the structure od knowledge about microbiological mechanisms. For the certainty, sources, and justification of knowledge, you can ask yourself several questions: Do you think whether knowledge is absolute or not? Do you justify about knowledge or you just accept them as is? Whether you believe in the source and authority of knowledge? After answering the questions, you will feel about the features of epistemic cognition. As to the fourth and fifth points, you can easily get the idea from their literal meanings. You can judge through seeing how one responses to dilemmas related to intellectual virtues and obligations and make the analysis of knowledge in terms of reliable and unreliable processes od belief justification. To grasp the overall meaning of the concept really worth thinking repeatedly. Have my answer explained more clearly for you to understand their concept?
DeleteWow!!!This article is great!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour points of view about those three levels of cognition is very clear and your comparison of first two level is brief but excellent. Different target, content and speed of development, all those are the differences between cognition and metacognition we agree with but we cannot express that clearly as you do. specifically , I like the sentence "Cognition aims at the external and specific object while metacognition aims at the internal and abstract object". That really point out the two level of cognition.
Besides, the examples are very apropos which help us to understand better.
Keep on! Looking forward to reading more your articles!
Thank you for your comment and agreement. In fact, I myself have a lot more to learn about the three levels of cognitions, especially for the epistemic cognition. So do you! To learn more, and you will know more.
DeleteThank you for your explanation for the three levels of cognition. And I like your example of nation education used to justify the opinion that different group, different social class and people in different age will have different thoughts. Maybe people with different education background have different cognition to the same case. So to the mainland student, nation education is just a course to know as a method of cognition. However, students in Hong Kong think they must attain the level of epistemic cognition to understand the nation education as an important course like maths, Chinese, etc. So it is difficult for them to accept nation education with such a significant status in their courses.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bella, I'm very glad that you accept my idea on epistemic cognition. And it is apparent that you have reached the third level on this problem. You, as a mainland student, can understand the Hong Kong people's thoughts, instead of complaining with friends about their fierce strike on courses. You think maybe they are just serious about every course like maths and Chinese. It's a very good reaction. That's also what I've mentioned that different people have different thoughts.
DeleteYou incorporate your own percept into the knowledge of Three Levels of Cognition, and apply it to the popular topics - Anti-Japan protest and country education movement interestingly. In my opinion, the gap of levels of metacognition between the different crowds are distinct, but I believe the gap could be largely reduced with more experience of group incidents.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, when I read your blog I can feel you write this blog with your unique thinking. The three levels of cognition you give are clear and your samples are convictive. Based on the three levels of cognition, individuals collect information and discuss with each other. Then form a active social networking system.
ReplyDeleteVery good example about example of nation education used to justify the opinion that different group, different social class and people in different age will have different thoughts, anyway, I believe that learning the real knowledge is the most important thing , we should not be effected by the others or the world.
ReplyDeleteSo many comments on this blog. I did not quite understand the three levels of cognition tought in the class. After reading this blog (especially the examples happened in our daily life for the Epistemic Cognition part)I have a clear understanding of these concepts.
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of guys mentioned about the "three levels of cognition" structure in their second blog and most of them analyzed on the difference between cognition and metacognition. We all feel that the concept of cognition on cognition is quite confusing because it never occurs to us before. Your analysis is quite explicit especially when examples are used. But personally, I think about the target part, metacognition is aimed at what we gained at cognition level. Only internal and abstract may not have the full explanation of the concept.
ReplyDeleteI’m very grateful that you gave your opinion to complement my explanation. My sentence that Cognition aims at the external and specific object while metacognition aims at the internal and abstract object is actually a very abstract one from the lecture notes. And I admit that it’s not enough to conclude the concept of metacognition. Your point of view is also included and its easy to understand---be aimed at what we gained at cognition level.
DeleteYour example to explain the three levels of cognition impress me a lot. But your explanation to the third level of cognition: Epistemic Cognition maybe wrong. In my opinion, the third level is not just know something but raise some new ideas from what you have known. your example the local students have their own thought maybe still in the second level.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. But I don’t think your point of view is right. I think my examples are all belong to the epistemic cognition. You can’t just justify what level it belongs to by comparing if you have raised questions or new ideas. As you can see from my fourth component of the epistemic cognition, it is epistemic virtue and responsibility, how one responses to dilemmas related to intellectual virtues and obligations can be one of the criteria to know the fact. You don’t have to raise new ideas again and again over your own former idea.
DeleteWow, I agree your view on the recent country education movement in Hong Kong. What is more interesting? Although there still has a lot people in HK objecting to the national education, the course of national education finally has been set up. And after that, some of the opponents realize that national education is not like what they think before. Maybe the third level of Cognition would take a longer time to generate.
